Droupadi Murmu is the new President of India

The Presidential elections 2022 were conducted on 18th July 2022. The counting of votes has finished and we have got our 15th President, Droupadi Murmu.

Candidates of the Presidential Elections 2022

The candidates who stood up for the post are BJP’s NDA (National Democratic Alliance) candidate Droupadi Murmu and Joint Opposition candidate, Yashwant Sinha.

Droupadi Murmu is an Indian politician and was a member of the Bhartiya Janta Party. She has served as Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021.

Yashwant Sinha is an Indian administrator and politician. He served as the Minister of Finance from 1990 until 1991 under PM Chandra Shekhar and second term from March 1998 to July 2002 under Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Election Process for electing the President

The President of India is elected by the members of an Electoral College which consists:

  • The elected members of both houses of Parliament
  • The elected members of the Legislative assemblies of all states.

The Presidential elections were held across 31 locations including the Parliament house, and 30 centres within the State legislative assemblies.

Members who voted in the elections

Out of 736 electors, 727 MPs and 9 MLAs are permitted by the Election Commission to vote at the Parliament House. A total of 728 electors cast their votes in the elections.

Counting of votes

After the count of votes by the MPs, Droupadi Murmu led with 540 votes while Yashwant Sinha got only 208 votes. After the second round of counting, Droupadi got 809 votes while Yashwant Singa got 329 votes. She secured 53% votes in the Electoral College and 69% votes in the third round of voting.

Out of the 3,219 valid votes, Mrs Murmu got 2,161 votes while Mr Yashwant Singa got a total of 1,058 votes. She won the Presidential polls by a huge margin.

The swearing-in ceremony for Mrs Droupadi Murmu will take place on 25th July after the tenure of current President, Ram Nath Kovind ends on 24th July 2022. Chief Justice, N.V Ramana will hold the swearing-in ceremony.

Droupadi Murmu becomes the first Tribal President of India and the second female President of India. She is also the country’s youngest President.
