Mithila Makhana is awarded Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Mithila Makhana is a species of Aquatic Fox Nut. It is grown in the Mithila region of Bihar and Nepal.

What is Aquatic Fox Nut?

Aquatic fox nuts or Phool makhana are seeds.

Makhana is used in many sweets and tasty dishes. They are also eaten as an evening snack. Eighty per cent of all the Makhana in India comes from the state of Bihar.

The GI Tag is given to the Mithila region of Bihar because it is known for growing fox nuts.

  • Government authorities believe that because of this action, farmers will get the best price for the high-quality Fox Nuts crops.
  • More than 5 lakh farmers in the Mithila region of Bihar could benefit from this decision.
  • A GI Tag is applied to products that have a particular geographical origin.
  • Moreover, the products possess qualities that can be attributed specifically to the region.
  • Once this label is put on a product, no one will be able to sell a similar item under that name.
  • The GI tag can be used for a maximum period of ten years. Thereafter, the GI tag needs to be renewed.
  • Fox nuts have a lot of important micronutrients like magnesium, calcium, phosphorous, and iron.
