Quit India Day – 9 August
Recommended for Preparatory Grades
Today, on Quit India Day this year, we celebrate the 79th anniversary of the Quit India movement. It is also known as August Kranti Day.
We celebrate this day by paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters.
What was the Quit India Movement?
The movement was started by Mahatma Gandhi to free India from British rule. It was launched officially on midnight of 8 August 1942 by the All India Congress Committee. On the same night, the police arrested all leaders including Gandhi. People came together in a huge group and participated in the movement, despite the absence of leaders.
What was the reason behind the movement?
- The British government in India had increased the price of essential items.
- Indians could no longer bear the burden and this brought everyone together against the British.
- The main centres of the Quit India movement were Satara in Maharashtra, Tamluk, Contai of Midnapore, Balurghat of West Dinajpur, Balia, Ajamgarh in Uttar Pradesh, Naogaon of Assam
Gandhi said to all Indians, ” Do or Die. We shall either free India or die in the attempt“.
The Quit India Movement thus laid the foundation for India’s freedom by gathering all the masses to fight against British rule. Hence, we remember Quit India Day.
