Annual Ganges river dolphin census begins

Annual Ganges river dolphin census beginsThe annual counting of the dolphins in the Ganga river has begun.

The annual dolphin census is the part of the ‘My Ganga, My Dolphin' campaign.

The World Wide Fund (India) and members of Uttar Pradesh Forest Department are conducting this census.
 	The census will be done within the upper Ganga stretch of about 250 km from 9 October to 15 October.
 	A new method named tandem boat survey is being used to accurately count the dolphins. It comprises of two boats, each with some observers and one data recorder.
 	During the census, they will also check other harmful activities like plastic dumping, illegal mining and water quality.
 	On the first day, the survey team covered a 35km stretch from Balawali to Bijnor barrage.

This survey is important as it helps to keep a check on the number of river dolphins in India

Increase in the number of dams is affecting the growth of dolphins.
 	In addition to this, dolphins are also facing difficulty in finding their prey in the dark water of river Ganga.
 	They will also come up with a plan to increase the survival rate of the Gangetic dolphin.

After the census, WWF (India) will share the detailed report of findings and awareness campaigns initiatives.
