National Farmer’s Day (Kisan Diwas) – 23 December

Recommended for Foundational Grades

In India, National Farmer’s Day (Kisan Diwas) is celebrated every year on 23 December.

We celebrate Farmers Day on the birthday of the 5th Prime Minister of India, Chaudhary Charan Singh.

Who was Chaudhary Charan Singh (23 December 1902 – 29 May 1987)?

India’s fifth Prime Minister, he was also known as the ‘champion of India’s peasants‘.

He introduced many policies to improve the lives of Indian farmers. He was also a leader in India’s independence movement and a leader of the Janata Party afterwards.

Why do we celebrate National Farmer’s Day?

We celebrate this day to raise awareness about the importance that farmers play in India’s economy. Agriculture is one of the most important occupations in India. This day also raises awareness of the importance of farmers and their work for us all and to thank them. It is through their hard work that we have food security and are able to eat and survive.

On National Farmer’s Day, people celebrate by organising various programs such as seminars, quiz competitions, exhibitions, essay writing competitions and more.

Currently, around 40 farmers’ unions across India are protesting against new farm laws. They want the government to put a repeal the new laws rolled out last month. Government is open to having a talk and discussing issues one by one and not repealing all the new laws.
