Swami Vivekananda – A learned spiritual leader

Swami Vivekananda was a monk and spiritual leader. His speeches, lectures and travels helped to spread the true teachings of Hinduism and spirituality. He also introduced the learning of Vedanta and Yoga to the western countries of Europe and America. 

  • Swami Vivekananda was born in Kolkata on 12 January in 1863 as Narendranath, or Narendra. 
  • He excelled as a student and was known for his memory and reading skills.
  • He joined the Brahmo Samaj in 1880 where he later met his guru and teacher Sri Ramakrishna. Ramakrishna was a saint who influenced Swami Vivekananda deeply.

  • After the death of Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda became a monk and took up his new name. He began traveling across India, meeting and talking to the people.
  • He then traveled to Chicago in North America to give his famous speech at the Parliament of Religions. His speech helped people of the world understand more about Hinduism.

  • He continued to travel and give lectures and speeches in England and America.
  • Back in India, he founded the Ramakrishna Math and Mission in 1897. The Ramakrishna Mission is a social service organization and has its headquarters at Belur Math in West Bengal.
  • Swami Vivekananda passed away in 1902 at the age of 39 years.

His teachings, lectures and service are an inspiration for everyone. Since 1984, Swami Vivekanand’s birthday is being celebrated as ‘The National Youth Day’ in India.
