International Day of Older Persons – 1 October

Today, the United Nations (UN) celebrates the International Day of Older Persons.
On this day, we focus on the well-being and needs of older persons (elderly). It is a day to remind us to care for them and not neglect them.
Over the next ten years, the number of older persons worldwide is projected to more than double. Many of them will be living in poorer countries. So, this day is more important than ever.
Globally, elderly people have been the worst-hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. During these difficult times, loneliness and mental health issues of elderly people need special attention.
Theme of the International Day of Older Persons
The theme of the day for 2021 is “Digital Equity for All Ages”. It affirms the need for access and meaningful participation in the digital world by older persons.
As per the United Nations, one-half of the global population is off-line (not able to use the internet). Moreover, recent reports by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) indicate that women and older persons experience digital inequity to a greater extent than other groups in society. They either cannot use it or cannot get the full benefits of technology.
So, on International Day of Older Persons, let’s think about the issues they face.
