COVID-19 update: Schools reopen in UP, Punjab, Sikkim from today

Let’s take a look at the COVID-19 update.

The number of new COVID-19 infections reported daily in India dropped below 60,000 for the second time this month.

The total cases reported till now is around 7.5 million, out of which around 6.6 million have recovered. The national recovery rate has improved to 88.26%.

Schools are reopening in Uttar Pradesh (UP), Punjab and Sikkim from today, 19 October.

Schools for classes 9th to 12th are opening in Uttar Pradesh from today. Classes will be held in two shifts – one for class 9 and 10 and the other for class 11 and 12. Officials have issued strict guidelines for everyone. Online classes will also continue and no student will be forced to come to school.

In Punjab, schools for students of Classes 9 to 12 will reopen in the areas outside containment zones for three hours a day.

In Sikkim, the government has decided to reopen all schools from 19 October in a graded manner. There will be no winter holidays this year and classes will be held six days a week.

COVID-19 update worldwide

Cases have crossed 40 million worldwide.

Europe is fighting the second wave of COVID-19 infections. Belgium imposed a nationwide overnight curfew on Monday. Switzerland made wearing face masks compulsory in indoor public spaces.

Israel and Melbourne in Australia have begun to gradually ease their strict lockdowns.

Anika Chebrolu, a 14-year-old Indian-American teenager has been awarded US$25,000 for her work on a potential drug to treat COVID-19. The award is called the 2020 3M Young Scientist Challenge.
