Cyclone Nivar approaches Tamil Nadu, PuducherryThe coastal regions of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are preparing for Cyclone Nivar, which has intensified into a "severe cyclonic storm".

The IMD (Indian Meteorological Department) says it is expected to get stronger. Nivar is expected to hit the coast, likely near Puducherry, by midnight or early tomorrow.
Key Facts

The cyclone  Nivar could hit the coast between Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu (which is around 56 km from the state capital Chennai) and Karaikal in Puducherry.
 	Today has been declared a public holiday in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
 	The cyclone will bring extremely heavy rainfall and winds between 120 and 130 km per hour. People living in areas, which are in danger of flooding have been moved to safety.
 	Bus services have been suspended in some districts. Flights and train services have also been suspended in places, which are expected to be affected.
 	The Puducherry government has informed people to stay indoors.
 	Around 1,200 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel have been sent to Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. Andhra Pradesh is also on alert for heavy rains.
 	The Indian Navy has said it is closely monitoring the movement of Nivar and rescue ships and teams are on standby.
