What causes a rainbow?

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

A rainbow is one of the most beautiful displays of nature. How does it happen?

A rainbow happens when light enters a water droplet, bending as it slows down a bit going from air to denser water. The light reflects off the inside of the droplet, separating into its many wavelengths or colours. When it exits the droplet, it makes a rainbow.

The different colours are because sunlight is made up of many colours of light.

A rainbow requires water droplets to be floating in the air. That’s why we see them right after it rains.

A rainbow is an optical illusion. This means it is something you can only see but does not actually exist in a specific spot in the sky.

While a rainbow looks like an arc (bow-shaped), it is actually a full circle. If we were on an aeroplane, under the right conditions, we can see an entire circular rainbow.
