The Union Home Ministry has announced the recipients for the Padma awards for 2021.

What are the Padma Awards?

The Padma Awards are one of the highest civilian awards of the country. They are given for exceptional and distinguished service in any field.

The awards are given in three categories – Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.

This year, 119 people have been awarded the Padma Awards. 7 people have received the Padma Vibhushan, 10 have received the Padma Bhushan and 102 people got the Padma Shri.

Padma Vibhushan awardees include former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and late singer SP Balasubrahmanyam.

Former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, late Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan and late Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi are among those who have been awarded the Padma Bhushan.

71-year-old social worker Sindhutai Sapkal known as ‘Maai’ and the ‘Mother of Orphans’ was a winner of the Padma Shri. She is considered a mother to over 1400 children and a grandmother to more than a thousand.

The awards will be presented a little later by the President of India at a function at Rashtrapati Bhawan in Delhi. See the full list here of the Padma awardees 2021.
