The world’s smallest reptile lives in Madagascar

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Do you know what is a chameleon? It is a small type of lizard whose skin changes colour especially according to its surroundings.

Scientists from Germany and Madagascar (an island country of Africa) have discovered a pair of tiny chameleons in Madagascar. The rainforests in Madagascar are home to many animals.

These chameleons are possibly the world’s tiniest (smallest) reptile. Only two of them were found –  one male and one female. These chameleons are so small they can easily sit on a fingertip.

These tiny animals are called “nano-chameleons” (very small chameleons). They are officially known as Brookesia nana or B. nana.

Reptiles

The reptile family includes snakes, lizards, and crocodiles. They are known as “cold-blooded” animals. This means their bodies have the same temperature as the area around them. This means, if the weather is warm, their bodies will feel warm.

There are so many animals in the world. Some live on land, some on trees, some in water and some fly up in the sky. Some are fun and playful and some quite dangerous too. Sometimes they work in teams but some prefer to be alone. But if we look carefully there is so much we can learn from them too! Can you think of some of the qualities that you love about animals? Read our animal news for kids for more interesting animal stories.

Curious Times is committed to providing the best experience and news to children. Do check out The Curious Magazine too, written for children, by children.
