COVID-19 update: Cases continue to rise in India

COVID-19 cases continue to rise in India as 59,118 new cases were recorded over the last 24 hours.

Maharashtra recorded a new single-day record with 35,952 cases. Punjab, Karnataka and Chhattisgarh are also reporting around 2,500 cases each daily.

Markets, hotels and restaurants will be closed on Holi (29 March) in Nagpur. Essential shops will be allowed till 1 pm but gatherings are not allowed on 28 and 29 March.

Gujarat, Karnataka, and Rajasthan have also placed restrictions on public gathering for upcoming festivals, including Holi.

Anyone found not wearing a mask in public places in Chhattisgarh will be fined ₹500.

People from outside Karnataka will have to carry a negative coronavirus test report to enter the capital Bengaluru from 1 April.

Overall, over 5.5 crore vaccines have been given in India till now. Starting on 1 April, everyone above the age of 45 years can get themselves vaccinated.

Globally, 125 million (12 crore and 50 lakh) cases have been reported until now. Out of them, 75 million (7 crore and 50 lakh) have recovered.

PM Narendra Modi visits Bangladesh

He is on a two-day trip to Bangladesh. This is his first foreign trip since the COVID-19 outbreak started. He is taking 1.2 million (12 lakh) vaccine doses along on this trip to Bangladesh.

PM Modi is there to celebrate the golden jubilee (50 years) of Bangladesh’s independence. While he is there, he will hold talks with the Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina.
