Babar Azam dethrones Kohli, is the new No. 1 ODI batsman

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

On Wednesday, Pakistan’s right-handed batsman Babar Azam became the new No. 1 ODI batsman in the world. This is as per the ICC (International Cricket Council) rankings for batsmen.

He managed to dethrone (knock off) India captain Virat Kohli from the top spot after more than 3 years! Kohli had been No. 1 since October 2017. Now, Kohli is at No. 2 while Rohit Sharma is No. 3.

Azam is only the fourth player from Pakistan to become the No. 1 ODI batsman. His match-winning 94 runs in the third ODI against South Africa on 7 April helped him gain the points to reach the top.

In Tests, Babar is at No. 6 and in T20Is, he is at No. 3.

Yesterday, the new No. 1 ODI batsman Azam also created a new record in T20Is. He scored 122 runs in the third T20I against South Africa. It is now the highest individual score for Pakistan in T20Is. It is also the highest T20I score against South Africa.

Not only that, but the 197 runs scored in the partnership between Azam and Mohammad Rizwan in the same match has also become the highest partnership for any wicket in a T20I chase.
