Sheffield F.C. is the oldest football club in the world

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Football is the most popular sport in the world today. There are many football clubs around the world today. Many of them are quite old.

However, none are as old as Sheffield F.C. (football club). Sheffield F.C. is the oldest football club in the world, that is still playing. It came into being in 1857 in the city of Sheffield in England.

How did it start?

In 1855, members of a cricket club in Sheffield arranged a ‘kickaround’ without any official rules to go by. These games continued over the next two years. Then, in May 1857, two of their members, Nathaniel Creswick and William Prest, went on to form the Sheffield Football Club. With cricket being a ‘summer sport’, they felt football would be perfect for the winter months.

From 1857 to 1860, the club members played among themselves. Then, in 1860, Hallam F.C., the world’s second-oldest club, formed elsewhere in the city. The two teams still play against each other today in the “Rules derby”.

The rules that the two teams played with were adopted by the English Football Association (FA) in 1863.

Sheffield F.C. is a recipient of the FIFA Order of Merit. This is an award that has been given to only one other club – Spain’s Real Madrid.

Currently

Today, the football club plays in the Northern Premier League Division One South East.
