COVID-19 update

India recorded over 2.3 lakh cases over the last 24 hours. India announced that vaccines will be available for those over 18 years from 1 May. Many states, including Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Assam, have announced it will be given for free.

PM Modi conducted an online meeting with chief ministers of 10 states to discuss the situation.

As many states are facing an oxygen shortage, the centre has set up a control room. This control room will work to coordinate the management of oxygen supply to different states.

The centre also announced that it will provide 5 kg free food grain to the poor for the next two months, May and June. This is under the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana scheme.

The UAE, UK and Canada have temporarily banned travellers from India.

Chief Justice of India (CJI) S.A. Bobde retires

CJI Bobde retired today from office. A brief ceremonial goodbye function was held today in his honour. CJI Bobde was the 48th Chief Justice of India. The new CJI will be N.V. Ramana.

SpaceX launches astronauts to space

A SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft launched four astronauts from three countries to the International Space Station (ISS) today. They will stay for six months in space. This is SpaceX’s third crewed mission to the ISS.

Indonesia’s search for missing submarine

A submarine called KRI Nanggala 402 disappeared on Wednesday in Indonesia. The government is searching for it, which had 53 crew members on board. The US military has sent aeroplanes to help with the search. Authorities are worried as the crew will run out of oxygen soon.
