A 30-year-old friendship

Hiroyuki Arakawa is a 79-year-old scuba diver living in Japan.

Who or what is a scuba diver?

A scuba diver is a person who swims inside the water using special equipment.

30 years ago, he took care of an injured fish named Yoriko. This led to a friendship between them, which is going on, even today! That’s a 30-year-old friendship!

Yoriko the fish lives in Tateyama Bay in Japan. This bay has an underwater Shinto shrine (temple). Shinto is a religion found in Japan. The diver, Hiroyuki, takes care of this shrine. So, now, whenever he visits, Hiroyuki rings a bell. The fish then hears the bell and comes to meet its friend.

Yoriko the fish

Yoriko is a type of fish called an Asian sheepshead wrasse. This is a large fish with a face that can look almost human.
