Cricket: New Zealand win the first World Test Championship

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

On 23 June, New Zealand won cricket’s World Test Championship (WTC). This is the first WTC, making New Zealand the first-ever Test champions.

New Zealand beat India by 8 wickets to win the final in England. They emerged victorious after a match that lasted 6 days. The match was supposed to be only for 5 days but due to rains, it stretched to 6.

A draw had looked likely when play on the final day began. But New Zealand managed to beat India nonetheless.

This is also New Zealand’s first-ever win in a major global cricket tournament. And they managed it by winning over cricket’s superpower, India.

Now, qualifications for the next WTC will start in August 2021. It will start with a five-Test series with India playing against England.

Test cricket

Test cricket is the oldest and most respected format of cricket. In each match, two teams of 11 players each play a four-innings match. The match can last up to five days (or more). It is the longest format of cricket and tests a team’s full strength.
