Mud volcano explosion causes huge fire in Caspian SeaOn 4 July, a mud volcano erupted in the Caspian Sea, near Azerbaijan. It led to a huge fire in the sea near its oil and gas fields.

The Caspian Sea is the world's largest inland body of water. It is also often called the world's largest lake. It lies between Europe and Asia, bounded by Kazakhstan, Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkmenistan.

Officials initially thought that it was due to an accident in one of the oil and gas fields. Now, they say that it was due to the explosion of the Ignatiy Stone Island mud volcano.
What are mud volcanoes?
Mud volcanoes are a rare type of volcano. When they erupt, they throw up a superheated slurry (mix) of mud and water instead of lava. This means they don't get as hot as regular volcanoes. However, they also contain a lot of natural gases, which can easily set on fire.

Earth has around 1000 mud volcanoes. Out of them, Azerbaijan has around 400 and they are some of the biggest and most violent mud volcanoes. Most mud volcanoes are situated on small islands but some are hidden below the sea.
