World’s largest sapphire cluster found in Sri Lanka

A newly-found sapphire cluster is the world’s largest sapphire cluster. It was found in Sri Lanka in the backyard of a house. Sapphires are a rare type of precious stone and a cluster means a group of them.

The Sri Lankan authorities said that some workmen who were digging a well found the cluster. The area where the cluster was found is called Ratnagiri. Ratnagiri is also known as the city of gems.

However, experts took a year to clean and identify the stones as a sapphire cluster. They say that is a special star cluster model. Moreover, it is the biggest such cluster found till now in the world. They also said that the cluster may be made up of 2.5 million carats. It is pale blue in colour and has been called the “Serendipity Sapphire. However, the stones in the cluster may not be of the highest quality.

What is the weight of this sapphire cluster?

The sapphire cluster weighs around 510 kgs.
