World’s oldest zoo panda celebrates turning 35

Recommended for Foundational Grades

An An is a giant panda who lives at a theme park called the Ocean Park in Hong Kong.

He just turned 35 years old. This makes him the oldest giant panda living in a zoo today! He is also the oldest male panda under human care in history. While An An is 35 years old in human terms, in panda years, he is 105 years old!

Ocean Park says that, generally, giant pandas in the wild live till about 20 years. But they live longer under human care.

So, how did An An celebrate his birthday?

The park had a birthday party for An An, with a tasty ice cream cake. He also got to eat bamboo shoots and fruits.

An An was born in Sichuan, China but has been living in Hong Kong for 22 years. Till 2016, he lived with his partner Jia Jia. But sadly, she died that year at the age of 38. At the time, she was the world’s oldest known living giant panda.

Sometimes they work in teams but some prefer to be alone. But if we look carefully there is so much we can learn from them too! Can you think of some of the qualities that you love about animals?
