The Paralympic Games are the Olympics for athletes with different disabilities. There are both Winter and Summer Paralympic Games. Since 1988, the Paralympic Games have been held immediately after the Olympic Games. This year, the Paralympic Games are about to start in Tokyo, Japan on 24 August.
It is important for us to know about the many amazing and inspirational Paralympians that India has produced. So, today, let’s start with Deepa Malik.
Deepa Malik is the first Indian woman athlete to win a medal at the Paralympic Games. She won a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games in Shot Put.
Moreover, she also won a gold medal in F-53/54 Javeline event at the Para Athletic Grand Prix held in Dubai in 2018.
Overall, this amazing athlete has won 58 national medals and 23 international awards. She has excelled at many sports, including motorsports. She has even undertaken an 8-day, 1,700 kilometres drive in zero temperatures. This drive is called Raid De Himalaya and it includes a climb to 18,000 feet.
Awards
Deepa Malik is the first para-athlete and oldest sportsperson to receive Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award. Moreover, she has also received Arjuna Award in 2012 and the prestigious Padma Shri earlier.
While Malik is no longer participating, she is the current President of the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI). This inspirational Paralympian says that India is sending its largest contingent (54 athletes) to the Paralympics this year and they will create history.
