2021 US Open: Medvedev beats Djokovic to win maiden Grand Slam

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

2021 US Open: World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev beat world No. 1 Novak Djokovic to win the men’s singles trophy at the US Open. Medvedev beat Djokovic by a score of 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

This is Medvedev’s maiden (first) US Open win as well as his first Grand Slam. The 25-year-old is the third Russian to win the men’s singles trophy at a Grand Slam.

With his win, Medvedev also becomes the first man since Rafael Nadal in 2010 to drop only one set on his way to winning the US Open men’s singles title.

His win also denied Djokovic the chance to win a Calendar Grand Slam and a record 21st Grand Slam title.

Golden Slam in Wheelchair tennis at the US Open

Dutch player Diede de Groot has become the first player to complete the Golden Slam in wheelchair tennis. De Groot beat Japan’s Yui Kamiji in the women’s wheelchair tennis finals at the 2021 US Open.

Moreover, later, Australian player Dylan Alcott also completed a Golden Slam, becoming the first men’s wheelchair tennis player to do so.

What is a Golden Slam in tennis?

A Golden Slam means winning all four grand slams (US Open, Wimbledon, French Open, Australian Open) and the Olympic gold medal in the same year.
