Copenhagen is the world’s safest city of 2021

Recommended for Middle Grades

2021’s Safe Cities Index has named the city of Copenhagen as the world’s safest city for the first time ever. It scored 82.4 points out of 100 in the report. Copenhagen is the capital city of Denmark in Europe.

This annual report is per the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Safe Cities Index (SCI).

What is Economist Intelligence Unit?

The Economist Intelligence unit is the world leader in global business intelligence. It analyses countries, industries and companies worldwide.

The report

The SCI by EIU ranks 60 cities across the world based on digital security, health security, infrastructure, personal security, and environmental security. This is also the first year that the index has included environmental security.

The world’s safest city, Copenhagen jumped directly from eighth place in 2019 to the top of the list in 2021. It topped five categories. Other cities in the top 5 list are Toronto (Canada), Singapore, Sydney (Australia) and Tokyo (Japan).

Copenhagen

The city has a low crime rate. Moreover, the report also states it is a mixed city and it has great social cohesion and a narrow wealth gap.

Copenhagen follows the concept of social cohesion. It means that the people build shared values and there is less gap between wealthy and poor people. This has helped it become the world’s safest city. For example, in Copenhagen, the cleaning assistant and head of a company meet at the supermarket and they have their kids in the same school.
