United Nations urges reopening girls’ schools in Afghanistan

Recommended for Secondary Grades

As the Taliban government is in power in Afghanistan, it is imposing many new rules and restrictions in the country.

From 18 September onwards, it has allowed boys from classes 6-12 and male teachers to attend schools. However, it is restricting entry for girls. The United Nations (UN) said that doing so violates the fundamental right to education.

Some schools have reopened for girls up to class 6. However, high schools still remain closed for girls. And even in universities, male and female students who are studying in the same classroom must be separated by a curtain.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) said that the delayed return of girls to secondary school may risk them being left behind in education and ultimately, in life. So, it has urged the new Taliban government to allow girls to attend schools.

Meanwhile, experts say that cash is in short supply, and the country is facing a mounting economic crisis.

Ban

The Taliban government has also banned the broadcast of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in Afghanistan due to its “un-Islamic content”. This is despite top Afghanistan cricketers like Rashid Khan and Mujeeb ur Rahman taking part in IPL 2021.
