Taliban announces new government in Afghanistan

Recommended for Secondary Grades

The Taliban has announced a new caretaker government in Afghanistan. The new acting prime minister of the government is Mohammad Hasan Akhund.

Akhund is currently on a United Nations sanctions list. He was also previously the foreign minister and then deputy prime minister when the Taliban was previously in power from 1996 to 2001.

Abdul Ghani Baradar, the head of the Taliban’s political office, will be the deputy leader,  while Sirajuddin Haqqani has been named as interior minister. Haqqani is one of the US FBI’s (Federal Bureau of Investigation) most wanted men. Overall, the list includes 33 names but does not include any women and very few people from the different tribes, other than the majority group, Pashtuns.

Protests

Many people are protesting against the Taliban in Afghanistan. People are calling for freedom and liberty. They also include women, who are protesting against the lack of women in the government. Reports say that some protestors, including the women, were beaten. The Taliban have banned protests unless authorised by the justice ministry.

Moreover, the Taliban has also reportedly ordered mobile phone internet services to be shut down temporarily in several districts.
