India weather: Floods in Chennai after record rainfall

Chennai in Tamil Nadu has been receiving record rainfall over the last two days. It is the heaviest the city has received since 2015. This has led to floods and waterlogging in the city.
As such schools and colleges in Chennai are closed today (8 November). Relief teams are also carrying out rescue operations across the city. 22 other districts in Tamil Nadu are also experiencing heavy rains.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin visited the rain-affected areas in Chennai and helped out with the relief measures. PM Modi also spoke to Stalin to discuss the situation.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more rain in the coming days. It has issued an orange alert in 14 districts, including Cuddalore, Villupuram, Chennai, and Kanchipuram.
The IMD has also predicted widespread light to moderate rainfall over Kerala, Andhra Pradesh during next the next five days. It has issued a yellow alert for 10 districts in Kerala.

Air quality in Delhi and neighbouring cities remain poor or very poor. By the end of this week, many states of North India including Delhi may see a drop of three to four degrees in the minimum temperature.
This year, winter is expected to be colder than usual in North, Central and East India.
