China passes resolution, establishing status of Xi Jinping
Recommended for Secondary Grades
Xi Jinping is the current President of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). He has been the president since 2013. Xi has also been serving as General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and Chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC) since 2012.
Over the years he has been in power, his status in the CCP and in the country has been growing, making him one of the most powerful leaders China has ever had.
On 11 November, the Chinese Communist Party under Xi passed a “historical resolution”. This resolution cements (confirms) Xi Jinping’s status as one of China’s most important leaders. The document is a summary of the party’s 100-year history and mentions its important achievements as well as future plans.
This is only the third time that the CCP has passed such a resolution. The first was passed by Mao Zedong in 1945 and the second by Deng Xiaoping in 1981.
Who was Mao Zedong?
Mao Zedong (or Chairman Mao) was a Chinese communist revolutionary who was the founding father of the People’s Republic of China. He was the chairman of the Chinese Communist Party from 1949 until his death in 1976. While he is considered to be controversial, he is also regarded as one of the most important individuals in the twentieth century.
Deng Xiaoping was a Chinese revolutionary and politician who served as the top leader of the People’s Republic of China from December 1978 to November 1989. He is often considered to be the “Architect of Modern China”.
The significance of the resolution
The resolution aims to establish Xi Jinping as an important national figure, equal to Mao and Deng. And will give him more power. The party passed the resolution at the sixth plenary session. This is one of China’s most important political meetings where about 400 top leaders of the CCP participated.
This resolution comes as China has become a global power today. Xi Jinping has been president for two terms now. And next year, he is will most likely be elected President for the third time. Earlier, China had a two-term limit on the presidency but that law was removed in 2018.
