Amazing Nature: Living root bridges

Recommended for Foundational Grades

Have you heard of the natural bridges, known as ‘Living root bridges” in Meghalaya in northeastern India? These bridges are made out of the root of living trees!

A few interesting facts about “Living root bridges”

  • They are found in the districts of Jaintia Hills and East Khasi Hills.
  • These bridges were created by the Khasi and Jaintia tribes in Meghalaya.
  • They are formed by shaping the roots of a tree like a bridge across a stream or river. Then the roots grow till they are strong enough to support the weight of a person.
  • They were created because it rains heavily in Meghalaya and bamboo or wood bridges did not last.

Strength and Age

  • Living root bridges take around 15-20 years to grow. After they are grown, they are stronger than modern concrete bridges.
  • Such bridges can hold up to 50 people at a time.
  • Many of the bridges are very old like the Umshiang Bridge, which is said to be 180 years old.
