Russian troops in Ukraine!
Recommended for Secondary Grades
The crisis in Russia and Ukraine have worsened, as Russian troops advanced in Ukraine. At the moment, the situation remains extremely tense, with the effects spreading to neighbouring countries.
North Atlantic Treaty Organization
First, let’s revisit the fundamental “North Atlantic Treaty Organization”. The treaty was formed in 1949 by the United States, Canada, and other Western European countries. It was aimed to protect each other against the Soviet Union.
Russia-Ukraine Crisis timeline
In 1990, leaders from the US and Germany talked about putting Germany back together. The United States said that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) couldn’t move east.
Thereafter, as the Czech Republic became a member of NATO, Russia’s NATO requests were turned down. This resulted in the “Georgia Color Revolution” and “Color Revolution“. No sooner did additional Eastern European countries join NATO, Ukraine lost the Crimea district.
Donbas and Luhansk, populated by Russians, broke away from Ukraine. In Donbas and Luhansk, there were supposed to be fewer tensions after the Minsk deal in 2014.
On January 1, 2019, the United States broke the armed forces treaty with the Soviet Union. This was a big deal because it was the first time this had happened.
The president of Ukraine said that he would work with Russia. However, things didn’t go as planned. Russia doesn’t want Ukraine to join NATO, which would protect Ukraine from Russia.
In 2022, the United States and NATO turn down Russian requests. Russia and Ukraine are at war right now, as Russian troops advance in Ukraine.
Russia-Ukraine
Ukraine has cut off diplomatic ties with Russia, after Vladimir Putin sent troops into eastern Ukraine on 24 February. The president of Ukraine has asked Russians to protest against Putin’s decision.
NATO leaders are discussing the ongoing situation in Kyiv. Areas affected by the crisis such as Lithuania has declared a state of emergency, and Moldova has closed its airspace.
World Leaders React
The President of the United States stated “The world will hold Russia accountable for the existing crisis.” Leaders from quite a few countries were quick to criticise Russia’s actions along with sanctions. In addition, they request a peaceful end to the existing crisis. However, countries like China and Iran remain silent.
