Brain implant helps the patient to communicate using their thoughts

In recent research, a completely paralyzed person has regained the ability to communicate with people. The communication is done using the thoughts of the person.

The person was able to communicate with his family and doctors using a brain-computer interface.

What is brain-computer interface?

A brain–computer interface is a direct communication path between the electrical activity of the brain and an external device.

A brain-computer interface allowed the person to spell the words using his thoughts.

About the research

The research says that it was the first time when a paralyzed person regained the ability to communicate with people around him. The patient had used eye-tracking technology to talk with family before he lost eye movements.

Researchers implanted the brain of the patient with microelectrodes. They continued the process for 86 days to communicate. The method used was called auditory neurofeedback.

Process of brain implant

The researchers showed the patient his brain activity. The patient learnt to change the brain signals. The person learned to hit audible notes by increasing or decreasing the neural activity.

According to the researchers, the patient spelt the words slowly on the first day. On the second day, hew as spelling freely. His first message was a thank you note to the research team.

The research head, Ujwal Chaudhary said that it was very satisfying that they were able to enable someone to express their feelings.
