2019 European Parliament election results declared

2019 European Parliament election results declaredThe results of the elections to the European Parliament of the European Union (EU) have been declared.

The elections were held between 23rd and 26th May 2019.

European People's Party (EPP) and S&D (Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats) have won the most number of seats combined, at 326. However this is lesser than last time.

The parties, which gained a large number of new seats are the Green Party and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE). 
 	The results mean that EPP and S&D will now have to seek the cooperation of Green Party and ALDE for passing laws and selecting officials.
 	The growing influence of Green Party is especially important as this party focuses on policies that will benefit the environment and fight against climate change.

The European Union (EU) is a political and economic union of 28 member states that are located primarily in Europe. The European parliament has 751 seats and elections happen every five years.

How do the Members of European Parliament (MEPs) get elected?

Each country is allocated a set number of seats, roughly depending on the size of its population.
 	The MEPs are directly elected by EU voters, who can vote by post, proxy or online, depending on the country.
 	Voting is compulsory in five member states.

Voting is done through three methods

The closed ballot  vote - voting for a party. This means voters cannot select individuals, only the party.
 	Single transferable vote - voting for an individual candidate, not party.
 	The preferential vote system - this method allows the voter to change the order of the names on a party list to boost their preferred candidate; remove candidates from a list; or even pick and mix candidates from various lists.
