What would 2400-year-old fruits be like?

The ancient Egyptian city of Thonis-Heracleion was Egypt’s largest Mediterranean port during 331 BC (more than 2000 years ago). However, it got submerged under water after a severe flood during the second century BC.

For many years, a team from the European Institute for Underwater Archaeology has been studying the area. They are conducting this study along with the Ministry of tourism and antiquities of Egypt. The mission has revealed very interesting results about the ancient Egyptian city.

They have found a Greek burial ground submerged under the water. The researchers said that the burial ground was in use 2400 years ago. The burial ground had many offerings, including fruit baskets filled with grape seeds and doum fruit.

What is doum fruit ?

Doum fruit is the fruit of an african palm tree and it is often found in tombs.

Untouched for 2400 years

Experts said that the offerings have been lying untouched underwater for 2400 years. This is because they seem to have been kept in an underground room. Moreover, the researchers say that the ancient city was buried underwater by a series of disasters including earthquakes. So, the fruits got submerged underwater before anyone could take them away.
