9 names recommended as new Supreme Court judges

 

Recommended for Secondary Grades

The Collegium (committee) headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) N V Ramana has recommended nine names to be appointed as Supreme Court judges.

Out of the 9, three are women while four are chief justices of high courts currently.

The chief justices of high courts whose names are recommended are – Justices Abhay Shreeniwas Oka of the Karnataka High Court, Vikram Nath of the Gujarat High Court, Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari of Sikkim High Court and Justice Hima Kohli of Telangana High Court.

Others include Justice B V Nagarathna from the Karnataka High Court and Justice Bela Trivedi from the Gujarat High Court. One of the nominees is a senior advocate and former Additional Solicitor General P S Narasimha. He is not a judge but a lawyer.

Appointment of judges of the Supreme Court

The Chief Justice of India is the head and chief judge of the Supreme Court, which consists of a maximum of 34 judges. When it is time to appoint new judges, a committee consisting of the current judges of the Supreme Court presents a list of its recommendations to the central government. Based on this, the centre will appoint the judges.
