Glass is a fragile material. It breaks down when dropped from a height. However, according to scientific research, modern glass bottles take at least 4000 years to decompose. People in Egypt sometime in 2000 BCE first started making items from glass and some still exist even now.

Glass never decays. Ancient items made of glass prove that even if the glass is broken into small pieces, it does not change its character. So, it is always better to recycle the glass than to put it into the landfill.
Recycling of Glass
Glass bottles and the other glass-made materials which we throw every month can build a skyscraper if collected. All discarded glass bottles can be recycled.

You will be surprised to note that recycling one glass bottle saves enough energy to light one 100 watt bulb for at least 4 hours. This process also causes less air and water pollution.

Mining and transportation of raw materials for glass, on average, produce waste about 175 kg out of one ton in India. So by recycling, one can also reduce the mining of raw materials.

The glass is composed of silica, sand, and lime. These materials require a very high temperature to change into a liquid. This liquid glass is then put in a cast to create different glass objects.

Hence, it is advisable to recycle the glass materials than to wait for 4000 years to decompose.
