A year on Venus is shorter than its day

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Venus is the second planet from the Sun in the solar system. It is Earth’s nearest neighbour.

Venus takes 225 Earth days for a revolution to travel around the Sun. But it takes 243 days for one rotation. This shows that each day on Venus is longer than a year on Venus.

To compare, Earth takes 365 days to go around the Sun but only 24 hours for one rotation.

Venus rotates very slowly. On Venus, the Sun rises in the west and sets in the east. There, the Sun also rises once every 117 Earth days. This means the Sun rises two times during each year, even though it’s the same day. All this makes it different from Earth.

Among all planets in the solar system, Venus is the hottest. It is a rocky planet (like Earth) with a thick atmosphere. It has no water but has long rivers of molten magma and thousands of volcanoes. Moreover, it does not have any moons.

Ancient times

The existence of Venus has been known since ancient times. This is because it can be seen with the naked eye (without a telescope). Its name comes from Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty.
