Akhil and Jithina after four months of hardships
The Indian couple, Akhil Reghu and his wife Jithina Jayakumar have united at their home in Kerala. Akhil and Jithina got married in Kerala in August 2021. A month later, Akhil Reghu joined Rwabee, a UAE flagged cargo ship as a deck cadet.
Hijack on the Red Sea
Akhil Reghu was amongst the seven Indian sailors who were captured in the hijack of a civilian cargo vessel in the Red Sea. The cargo was hijacked by Houthi rebels because they thought that the cargo was carrying military supplies to Saudi Arabia.
The Houthi rebels move the 11-member crew between the ship and a hotel in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa. The captors were kept in a suite and they were not allowed to move out. Also, they were allowed to call their family once e in 25 days, but later, it was reduced to a fortnight.
Akhil and his colleagues were released last week after spending 112 days in detention in Yemen.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine
Jithina Jayakumar was studying medicine in Kyiv, Ukraine. When she learnt about the hijack at the Red Sea, she started messaging the government officials in India to seek help and to ensure her husband’s safe return.
But, when Russia invaded Ukraine, she had to save herself and to continue her efforts for her husband’s safe return. When the war began, Ms Jayakumar and her friends were forced to take shelter in an underground bunker. Ms Jayakumar felt that she won’t be able to escape from the country.
Ms Jayakumar managed to leave Ukraine around the second week of March, travelling first by train to Hungary and then flying to India. When she reached home, she continued her efforts to contact officials to get her husband released.
Last week, Akhil Reghu returned back home to where they met and it really felt like rebirth in Jithina’s words.
