Pygmy hogs are the world’s tiniest pigs, standing only eight inches tall in northern India. They are also the most endangered pigs on the planet. However, breeding efforts have given this little creature a realistic chance of surviving.

The Pygmy Hog is the smallest and rarest wild pig (or hog) on the planet.

Interesting Facts about Pygmy Hogs!

Pygmy hogs are found in tall grass habitats, near water.

  • Earlier they were found throughout the southern base of the Himalayas.
  • Now it is found in 3 places in Assam—Manas, Sonai Rupai and Orang.

Pygmy Hog Conservation Programme!

The pygmy hogs came very near to becoming extinct due to the destruction of its habitat. A successful conservation project called the Pygmy Hog Conservation Programme got its numbers to a level that is better now.

  • After breeding in the conservation centre, they released the first set of hogs in 2008 into the Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary, Assam.
  • The conservation centre released more hogs in the following years.
  • It is now a critically endangered species that still need help and attention for its survival.

 

Conservation of grasslands is very important for the protection of wildlife species like the Pygmy Hog.
