American pika an adorable animal is going strong against climate change

Recommended for Foundational Grades

The American pika is a very cute tiny animal that looks like a mix between a bunny and a mouse. They are herbivorous (plant-eating), smaller relatives of rabbits and hares.

They live in the cold mountains in the western part of North America.

The American pika overheat easily in hotter climates. So, climate change was a huge threat to them and their numbers were decreasing.

However, a new study shows that they could actually be changing to adjust themselves to the growing hotter climate.

When the climate gets warmer, pikas generally move their nests higher up the mountains. However, a survey has found that there are many pikas that are living even at hot, lower regions.

This shows that they are able to adjust their habits to live in hotter temperatures, even though they are sensitive to it.

While many animals are suffering due to climate change, this is a good example of how animals and nature can adjust to changing environments.
