Ancient Egyptian rock-cut tombs

Egypt has many ancient treasures and we keep discovering them time and again.

Recently, a team of archaeologists accidentally discovered around 250 rock-cut tombs in Egypt. These tombs (a place where a person is buried) were discovered at the Al-Hamidiyah necropolis near Sohag.

What is a necropolis?

A necropolis is an ancient large well-designed cemetery where many dead people are buried.

The graves are very old. They range in age from about 4200 years ago to about 2000 years ago. The tombs come in different styles. They are all cut into different levels of a mountain face.

Experts believe that due to their small sizes, the ancient Egyptian rock-cut tombs may have been used by the common people. They also found items like pots, mirrors and bones in the tombs. So, it tells us a lot more about the life of ordinary citizens in those days.

Egyptian afterlife

Ancient Egyptians believed in life after death. In this ‘afterlife‘, people still lived in the same way as they did on Earth. So, when they died, they were buried with pots, jewellery and other things they would need to use every day.

So, these ancient Egyptian rock-cut tombs help us learn more about their beliefs.
