Archaeologists in Saudi Arabia explore ‘forgotten kingdoms’
Recommended for Middle Grades
Archaeologists are working in the desert and mountains of Al-Ula in Saudi Arabia to explore the ancient and ‘forgotten kingdoms’ of Dadan and Lihyan. An archaeologist is someone who studies ancient societies and peoples by examining the remains of their buildings, tools, and other objects.
Al-Ula in Saudi Arabia is a famous tourist spot. It has the city of Madain Saleh which is about 2,000 years old. And this city belonged to the Nabateans, an ancient Arab people who also built the famous city of Petra in Jordan. It also has the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in Saudi Arabia.
Now, archaeologists are working on excavating (digging up) five nearby sites related to the Dadan and Lihyan civilisations.
Forgotten kingdoms
Lihyan (also called Dadān or Dedan), was a powerful ancient Arab kingdom that played an important vital cultural and economic role in the north-western region of the Arabian Peninsula. It existed about 2000 years ago and was one of the largest kingdoms of its time. A peninsula is an area of land surrounded by water on three sides.
These ‘forgotten kingdoms’ existed before Islam came to Saudi Arabia. They are also mentioned in the Old Testament of the Hebrew Bible.
While it is most famous for its oil fields, Saudi Arabia has been opening up to tourists in recent years. So, it has been looking for ways to attract tourists. And the Al-Ula region is one such important tourist site.
