Assam gets a Special Rhino Protection Force in Kaziranga

Assam gets a Special Rhino Protection Force in KazirangaA Special Rhino Protection Force (SRPF) was deployed (sent into action) in the Kaziranga National Park (KNP) in Assam on 30th June.

There are 82 special force members, with 8 women among them. 
 	They have been trained to fight poachers* and understand animal behaviour. They will be protecting tigers too.
 	SRPF is funded by the National Tiger Conservation Authority, which recommended setting up of the special force.

The SRPF recruits were trained for 43 weeks at the Forest Guard School in Makum, eastern Assam. They also underwent weapons training at the 9th Assam Police Battalion in Nagaon district.

KNP has eight ranges (divided areas) under two wildlife divisions — Eastern Assam and Biswanath. The SRPF will be deployed in the eight ranges.

Kaziranga National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Two-thirds of the world's great one-horned rhinoceroses (rhinos) live in Kaziranga.

The Rhinoceros is a very endangered animal and needs heavy protection from poachers.

*Poachers: People who illegally hunt or capture animals
