Astronauts face challenges while sleeping in space
Recommended for Middle Grades
How do astronauts sleep in space?
It is not so easy to sleep in space. Microgravity affects the ability of the astronauts to rest horizontally, so they need to adapt new ways to be stable while sleeping.
What is microgravity?
In space everything or person becomes weightless. This condition is called microgravity.
Astronauts’ sleeping pattern
The sleeping spaces in the International Space Station are the size of a phone booth along with various elements. Also, they have a sleeping bag that can be attached to the wall.
NASA says that the astronauts are weightless due to microgravity and they can sleep in any orientation. But the astronauts have to hold on to something, so that they don’t float up and hit something.
The astronauts have a pillow, a lamp, an air vent, a personal laptop and a place for personal items. If the person does not want to sleep inside his compartment, they could attach the sleeping bag to the floor, ceiling or any other wall.
Each astronaut is assigned eight hours to sleep, but they are already rested for six hours. According to the Canadian Space Agency, researchers say that the human body gets less tired in weightlessness, as the muscles do not work as much as they work on earth.
Noise challenge in space
The space station produces a lot of noise and it is very uncomfortable for the astronauts. The lack of silence can affect the astronauts and, therefore, they have to use earplugs while sleeping.
