Australia beat New Zealand to win maiden T20 World Cup

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

On 14 November, Australia emerged as the champion of the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. It is their maiden (first) T20 World Cup trophy.

Australia played against New Zealand in the final at the Dubai International Stadium in the UAE.  Australia won the toss and elected to bowl first.

New Zealand posted 172 runs for four wickets in 20 overs. and New Zealand captain Kane Williamson had a smashing inning, scoring 85 runs off 48 balls. But this was not enough to defeat Australia as they were able to manage to chase down the target. Australia won by 8 wickets. Australia’s Mitchell Marsh and David Warner both hit half-centuries.

David Warner won the Player of the Tournament while Mitchell Marsh won Player of the Match.

Road to victory in the 2021 Men’s T20 World Cup

Both teams had finished second in their groups in the Super 12 Round. Then New Zealand defeated England, while Australia defeated Pakistan, in the semi-finals.

Neither team had won a T20 World Cup before this but they have both won the ODI World Cup before. In fact, Australia is the only team to win 5 ODI World Cups. And New Zealand won the first-ever ICC World Test Championship earlier this year, in June.
