British teen Emma Raducanu creates history with first win at US Open
Recommended for Preparatory Grades
18-year-old British tennis player Emma Raducanu won the women’s singles trophy at the 2021 US Open. She has made history by becoming the first-ever qualifier and the first British woman since 1977 to win a Grand Slam.
“Qualifier” means her rank was not high enough to get a direct entry into the tournament; she was ranked at 150th place when she entered. So, she had to play qualifying matches before the tournament.
Raducanu beat 19-year-old Canadian Leylah Fernandez at the all-teen final at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, New York. She won by a score of 6-4, 6-3. In fact, Raducanu didn’t drop a single set in the entire tournament this time, winning all 20 of them.
This was the first Grand Slam final for both Radacanu and Fernandez. Moreover, it was Raducanu’s second time at a Grand Slam.
Men’s singles at the US Open
Novak Djokovic will face Daniil Medvedev in the final, at 1:30 AM (IST) on 13 September. If Djokovic wins this, he will be winning a Calendar Grand Slam (winning all four Grand Slams in the same year).
