Butterflies taste with their feet!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

We all love butterflies. They are known for their colourful wings, flying from flower to flower. They are, at first, born as caterpillars (out of eggs) and later, become butterflies.

How many types of butterflies exist?

Today, there are about 165,000 types of butterflies. They are seen on every continent except Antarctica. They come in all sizes and colours. The largest ones may reach 12 inches (30 centimetres) across, while the smallest may be only 0.12 inches (0.3 centimetres).

Key facts about how butterflies taste with their feet!

  • Butterflies, however, don’t have taste buds the same way we do.
  • We have taste buds on our tongues that tell us how food tastes – if it is spicy or sweet.
  • But, butterflies’ mouthparts mainly serve as a straw through which they suck up their food—no chewing necessary.
  • It might sound strange to us humans, but butterflies rely on their feet to taste food.
  • Their feet have taste sensors on them that help to locate food for their caterpillars.
  • They stand on a leaf and give it a taste.
  • If they determine the plant is something their caterpillars can eat, they’ll lay their eggs in this spot.
