Three-child policy is introduced in China
Recently, China has introduced the three-child policy. This policy was announced in May 2021 but it is formally passed in February 2022. It is a reversal of China’s rigid one-child policy.
China’s One-child policy
From 1980 to 2016, China had a one-child policy.
What is one-child policy?
The one-child policy was a program in China that limited the Chinese families to have only one child.
This one-child policy was implemented nationally in 1980. It was implemented to control the population of the country. The Government of China said that the population was increasing rapidly at that time. This policy was modified and rural parents were allowed to have a second child if the first child was a daughter.
Two-Child policy
In 2015, the Chinese government established a two-child policy. It means that Chinese couples could have two children.
Recently, the two-child limit was taken over by a three-child limit in May 2021.
China’s three-child policy
Chinese society is ageing rapidly. The official population statistics state that the Chinese population will shrink in the coming years. Therefore, the three-child policy is established in response to the rapid ageing of the Chinese population.
Chinese census of the decade shows that the population of China grew at its slowest rate during the last 10 years. The fertility rate is 1.3 children per woman in 2020.
