Hyderabad (“City of Pearls”) witnesses the first Breathing Lung Transplant
India’s first Breathing Lung Transplant
On 12 December 2021, Hyderabad’s Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences, witnessed the first Breathing Lung Transplant. In this process, the healthy lung is preserved in a machine (called “organ reconditioning box”) to improve the chances of acceptance and functioning in the patient’s body.
Moreover, in India, this process has been used for the first time by doctors.
Benefits for patients
The “Breathing Lung Transplant” process has several benefits for a patient.
Firstly, it gives the patient more time – between the process of removing damaged lungs and finding a healthy organ donor.
Who is a donor?
A person who gives blood or a part of his/her own body for medical use.
Secondly, the donated lung’s performance is carefully monitored and supervised by a team of experts. So it gives the patient a better chance of survival.
Thirdly, after all the tests have been carefully monitored and performance checked, the patient gets the organ in fully working condition. This also increases the patient’s body to accept the organ and adjust to his/her body.
