Code breaker Alan Turing appears on U.K.’s new bank noteThe mathematician Alan Turing will feature on the new £50 note. The Bank of England announced on Monday 15th July 2019. He was selected among 12 candidates.

The new £50 note will go into circulation in 2021.

Alan Turing's accomplishments

Turing played an important role in the development of early computers.
 	He was nicknamed 'code breaker'. His code-cracking abilities were very useful in World War II.
 	He helped in deciphering German naval messages. These were enciphered with the Enigma machine.*

Alan's life history

At the age of 41, he was declared guilty for having a homosexual relationship, by a court of law. After this, he committed suicide.
 	In 1952, homosexuality was considered a crime.
 	In 2013, he was given a royal pardon* posthumously*.

*Enigma machine: An encryption device used in the early to the mid 20th century to protect diplomatic and military messages.

*Royal pardon: An official order given by the king or queen to stop the punishment.

*Posthumously: after the death of the person.
