COVID-19: India’s recovery rate highest since March 2020

India reported 14,348 new COVID-19 cases over the last 24 hours, as per the Ministry of Health. It also reported that India’s recovery rate is at 98.19%, which is the highest since March 2020. The country’s active caseload stands at 1,61,334.
The central government said that about 11 crore people are overdue for their second shot of the COVID-19 vaccine. This means that they took the first shot but haven’t taken the second one yet, even though the time has come. The gap between the first and second dose is 12 weeks for Covishield and four weeks for Covaxin.
School for all grades in Delhi are set to open from 1 November. However, colleges still remain closed as they await directions from the government.
Global situation
Russia is facing an increase in cases and the government is imposing lockdowns in Moscow until 7 November. Only shops selling food, medicine and other essentials will remain open. Russia is among the countries worst hit by the pandemic.
China is also facing an increase in cases in a few places. In the capital, Beijing, officials have told residents to postpone weddings and keep funeral ceremonies short.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said that it needs about US$23.4 billion over the next 12 months for its plan to fight COVID-19. It has urged the leaders of the G20 countries to donate the amount needed.
